In the life of a porn star, the personal and professional beings are finally united, overlapping perfectly as they should in an economically competitive society. A true model of moral austerity, the porn star has traded the moral wanderings of desire with the murky pool of human relationships for pure effectiveness. Porn stars transform the many inefficiencies and hesitations of human life into machine-like predictability and profitability, one hip thrust at a time.

Having rid sex of the embarrassment of actual feelings and desires, the porn star embodies the ideal American work ethic and the highest form of professionalism.

Passive consumers of the porn star’s exploits, in contrast, expose a less victorious side of the American dream. The prevalence of what specialists call autoerotism in the United States can’t be all that healthy. We are clearly in a culture of overcompensation. My two cents is that all American excesses, from obesity to overspending, can be traced back to compensation for lack of sex. Hence, the impressive results of the porn industry in America.

Your average American has given up on the potential embarrassments and real troubles of entertaining an actual sex life. Instead, he or she overindulges in socially acceptable consumerism (food, shopping) or virtual (clean?) stimulations (TV, internet porn, chat rooms). This is a dead-end. Obesity has become an epidemic and the 2011 sexting scandal involving former U.S. representative Anthony Weiner showed that not even virtual sex is safe in America. Read more
